Akshaya Tritiya is considered one of the most sacred and auspicious days in Hindu tradition. The word "Akshaya" means "never diminishing," and it symbolizes eternal prosperity, fortune, and success. The day is associated with several mythological events, one of the most prominent being from the Mahabharata.
During their exile in the forest, the Pandavas faced hardships and food scarcity. To help them, Lord Krishna gifted them a divine vessel called the Akshaya Patra — a magical pot that would provide unlimited food until Draupadi (the queen) finished her meal for the day.
One day, the sage Durvasa, known for his temper, visited the Pandavas along with his disciples. Draupadi had already eaten, and the Akshaya Patra was empty. Worried that they wouldn’t be able to feed the sage and invite his wrath, Draupadi prayed earnestly to Lord Krishna.
Moved by her devotion, Lord Krishna appeared and found a single grain of rice left in the pot. He ate it, and miraculously, the hunger of Durvasa and all his disciples was satisfied — without them ever being served.
This event is said to have occurred on Akshaya Tritiya, and it became symbolic of unending abundance and divine grace. Since then, the day is considered perfect for starting new ventures, buying gold, and performing charitable acts — all believed to bring eternal rewards.

अक्षय तृतीया की तिथि को कई धार्मिक घटनाओं से जोड़ा गया है। एक प्रमुख कथा महाभारत काल से जुड़ी हुई है।
जब पांडव वनवास में थे, तब श्रीकृष्ण ने उन्हें एक चमत्कारी पात्र (अक्षय पात्र) भेंट किया था। यह पात्र द्रौपदी के लिए था, जिससे वह तब तक अन्न निकाल सकती थीं जब तक वह स्वयं भोजन न कर लें। एक दिन ऋषि दुर्वासा अपने शिष्यों के साथ पांडवों के पास आए। उस समय द्रौपदी भोजन कर चुकी थीं और पात्र खाली था।
द्रौपदी ने मन ही मन श्रीकृष्ण को पुकारा। श्रीकृष्ण तुरंत वहां आए और पात्र में एक बचे हुए चावल के दाने को देखकर उसे खा लिया। उस एक दाने से ही सारे ऋषियों की भूख शांत हो गई और उन्होंने पांडवों की परीक्षा नहीं ली।
इसी दिन को अक्षय तृतीया कहा गया, क्योंकि उस दिन से अक्षय (जिसका कभी क्षय न हो) पुण्य, संपत्ति और भाग्य की प्राप्ति होती है। तभी से यह दिन शुभ कार्यों के आरंभ, दान-पुण्य और सोना खरीदने के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ माना जाता है।
