Ganga Dussehra 2025: Story, Rituals, Significance & Mantra - Ganga Dussehra, also known as Gangavataran, is a sacred Hindu festival that celebrates the descent of the holy river Ganga from heaven to earth. This auspicious occasion usually falls in the month of Jyeshtha (May-June), according to the Hindu calendar, and lasts for ten days, culminating on Dashami Tithi.
The Story Behind Ganga Dussehra
According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed severe penance to bring the celestial river Ganga down to earth in order to purify the ashes of his ancestors and grant them salvation (moksha). Pleased by his devotion, Lord Brahma instructed Ganga to descend to earth. However, her immense force could have destroyed the planet, so Lord Shiva agreed to hold her in his matted locks and gently release her to the earth in streams.
The day Ganga finally touched the earth is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra, symbolizing the victory of purity over sin.
